Hip-Hop exploded throughout the five boroughs this weekend as New York City hosted the 4th Annual VH1 Hip-Hop Honors giving props to A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliott, and Whodini.

As I watched hip-hop enthusiasts, stylers and profilers rock the Hammerstein Ballroom from my 13” television, my heart ached for the current state of the genre. Performances hearkened back to an era where I couldn’t wait to turn on the radio.

Favorite Moments of the Night:

  • Snoop Dogg and Bow Wow reunited on the stage for “What’s My Name?”

I give props to Hip-Hop so Hip-Hop hooray…

Feel free to give props…or not.

My favorite moment was when Doug E. Fresh got up and did about a minute of “The Show”. But I felt the same way, a sort of melancholy when reminded of what hip hop used to sound like. There’s a real sense of joy in old school hip hop that seems missing from most of what you hear today. I don’t mean to sound like a coot or something, but the old stuff is palpably exuberant in a way hip hop just isn’t anymore, by and large. And usually you could dance to it without just bouncing up and down…where have the rhythm and the blues gone?
